WORDLE #130

For The Sunday Whirl: Expected, Drunkard, Edge, Trumps, Prophet, Born, World, Mends, Binds, Sleepy, Circles, Thunder.

The Truth

What nobody expected:
Drunkard, living on the edge
Trumps Prophet born to this world...

Mends his ways; binds sleepy group
Confirms crop circles are sent
To warn of times of thunder...

WORDLE #129

For The Sunday Whirl: Clever, Chance, Flesh, Ripe, Secret, Nest, Basket, Blinked, Stars, Saw, Hand, Swept.

BRUSH OFF

He was ripe for the picking

She was clever; took her chance
Offered pleasures of the flesh

Inside her secret love nest
A basket of broken hearts

He saw the light; raised his hand
Blinked those stars out of his eyes
Swept her under the carpet...

For Sunday Whirl:   Hillside, Where, Gathered, Ghosts, Spill, Swarm, Worship, Exact, Patches, Unbidden, Sharp, Edges.

ADORED

A hillside where gathered ghosts
Spill and swarm to worship... me

This is an exact account
Not patches of unbidden
Daydreams with no sharp edges

WORDLE #127

For Sunday Whirl: Peering, Three, Pile, Apples, Spirits, Stories, Clues, Rash, Claws, Secret, Cradle, Exile.

HOME TRUTH

Peering into your conscience
at three decades of decay
a pile of rotten apples
denounces your high spirits

Your stories reveal the clues
and the truth spreads like a rash
that your sharpened claws can't scratch

You'll never keep a secret
from the cradle to the grave

...unless you live in exile

WORDLE #126

For Sunday Whirl: Vivacious, Vibrant, Vacuous, Manipulative, Vision, Single, Sumptuous, Slather, Spread, Short, Sassy, Violet, (Master).

PURPLE HAZE

Manipulative master,
vacuous yet vivacious,
harbours a single vision;
a vibrant, sumptuous scene
for his short, sassy servant...

Emphasis on Violet
(vio-LET, not vio-LATE)

Spread the word... slather it on...!

WORDLE #125

For Sunday Whirl

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO...?

You didn't pay to change the answer
Only used magic to intrigue her
Made her the center of your attention
Took her to another dimension
Ticked her boxes and rung her bell
Stains on your conscience have stories to tell

WORDLE #124

For Sunday Whirl: Inky, Wet, Scarlet, Oiled, Feathery, Sway, Sparks, Close, Hole, Shoots, Doubt, Plot.

SHAMELESS

Inky, wet, scarlet fluid gets you well oiled.
You're feeling feathery light as you roll and sway.
This sparks a close encounter with a hole in the road that shoots out in front of you.
Without doubt you've lost the plot...!

WORDLE #123

For Sunday Whirl

BLOWN AWAY

Wind from south is fierce enough
Keeps gusting as she cries out...
She'll train her bitter curses
On spring's untested filters
...And have our heads in pieces

WORDLE #122

For Sunday Whirl: If, Dreamed, Vision, Nestled, Heart, Years, Persuaded, Stay, Tribute, Period, Floor, Degrees, Space.

LOST IN SPACE

If she'd dreamed at all
That vision would have nestled
In her heart for years

Persuaded to stay
She paid tribute to her man
For a period

Life on the top floor
Was killing her by degrees
Now she's lost in space

WORDLE #120

For Sunday Whirl: Shadow, Bread, Salt, Sense, Breath, Sends, Head, Gravity, Plans, Thread, Shoes, Landscape.

FORETHOUGHT

You think...

Without a shadow of doubt
Baking bread to earn your salt
Makes perfect sense...

But does it...?

Deep breath...

Have a second thought...

This sends signals to your head...

Then you think...

Blame gravity for the way
In which even best laid plans
Fall down hard and lose their thread...

Now you think...

No shoes required to walk this landscape...!

OPEN LINK NIGHT #107

For d'verse Poets

THE PURSUIT OF TRIVIA

A misdirected comment
at an inopportune time
creates a broken window
of missed opportunity…
which is kind of logical,
in a messed-up kind of way…

An open invitation
in a tight-sealed envelope,
initiates a response
that will go without comment
without ever being said.

An understated compliment
offers an understanding
of overstated indulgence
in unreasonable affairs…

The product of a misspent youth…?
Or of a well spent future…?

No-one knows, or cares, these days…
They’re all too preoccupied
with things of no importance…
things of no significance…
with things that don’t make much sense.

All have other fish to fry,
other considerations
they must take into account…
other accounts they must take
into consideration
while you ponder aimlessly
sitting there, thinking about
nothing in particular…
listening to the latest
hot chart hits and breaking news;
global information from
your local radio station,
now turning its attention
to random acts of boredom.

Infotainment Show phone-in…
Monday morning, possibly
maybe even afternoon
but definitely Monday…

You make a simple request
as cynical as ever;
a dedication to those
who dedicate their lives to
The Pursuit of Trivia…
those with too much time on their hands,
too much cash in their pockets,
too much disposable income.
No sign of an overdraft
not even the slightest hint;
those who definitely have
visible means of support
without any strings attached…

You’re not jealous or anything
although it must be stated
you can’t afford the luxury
of managing your own time;
prioritising interests.

You couldn’t even compile
a short list of things to do;
setting out intentions in
chronological order…
a graphical presentation,
or put it another way,
a Bucket List of wishes
you’d never wish anyway…
You wouldn’t even wish them
on your greatest enemy…
And we all know who that is…

It happens to be yourself…

OPEN LINK NIGHT #106

For d'verse Poets

GOING DOWN

As you already well know
it only takes a second
of idle conversation…

A lapse of concentration
transforms a situation
from random speculation
to scenes of devastation
as ideas develop.

At last obsession takes hold
concepts become distorted…
and it’s all downhill from there…

Disturbed imagination
interrupted train of thought…

Normal service is resumed
but due to circumstances
beyond anyone’s control…
out of reach of influence
of impartial, outside help
independent observers
or unbiased referees…
the mechanics of the mind...
dangerous daydreams… take hold.

Unable to sleep at night
logic and reason are lost...

A world of whims without walls
events without witnesses
instruments of self-neglect
and erratic behavior
are all at your disposal
with unlimited access…

No constraints, restrictions.
Decisions go unchallenged;
all departures are delayed
as new arrivals check in.

All appointments are cancelled
all ambitions unfulfilled
and of course, all bets are off...

Left to your own devices
seeds of apathy are sown
and uncertainty takes root…

And now you find you’re living
on a piss-poor diet of
pessimistic projections
and worst-case scenarios
with cynical points of view
until prophecies bear fruit
and new attitudes are born…

which aren't necessarily
what anyone would describe
as healthy, wholesome values.

No good deed goes unpunished
which is just as well because
at this very moment, you’re
only scratching the surface…

Locked in your troubled conscience
hidden in your sub-conscious
issues rise to the surface
which of course are followed by
appeals for absolution.

However, predictably
your petitions go unheard…

No-one knows, and no-one cares…

Someone must pay the penance;
you know that person is you.
But your painful, plaintive pleas
are not acts of contrition…

No need to apologise
for the deeds of yesterday
for which you have no regrets…

Actions you can’t justify
but actions nevertheless…
if anyone ever asked.

Behind your sinister smile
you've never tried to disguise
your answer to the question
ever since all the fat cats
went away… permanently,
leaving now fat mice to play…
inventing Dangerous Games
to play… when the time is right.

And so the games continue…

Think before you shed a tear
There is no room for regret

Time to repair the damage
Your chance to wipe the slate clean

Be driven by your longing
To correct what you've become

Take the fragments of that night
Key those pieces into place

Let your thoughts mesh together...

THE HANGOVER

For Sunday Whirl: Morning, Bend, Bear, Unstable, Wild, Retreat, Fallen, Meadow, Rock, Bridge, Island, Lane.

PART I

Bird song beckons the morning
It's driving me round the bend!
I'm a bear with a sore head
Still a little unstable
After another wild night

PART II

When they sounded the retreat
I must have fallen asleep
Just the meadow for a bed
And a rock for a pillow

PART III

Now I have to cross a bridge
Get off this traffic island
And back into the fast lane...

HOTEL 27 REVIEW

Review by: ian biro on May 21, 2013 : star star star star star

Hotel 27

https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/278675

This is a story about an Englishman called Michael Falcon who went to Thailand, and found an unspoilt paradise in the northern province of Isan. It’s also very much about his legendary son, the incredible baby elephant, Changnoi.

From suburban south Manchester to the seedy streets of Bangkok and the relatively unspoilt islands of Ko Sichang and Ko Samet then back across the seas to Edinburgh and Manchester before returning to the land of the smile, and discovering a remote Isan village.

The tale is narrated at a fast and furious pace in a poetic way, and I for one, couldn’t close this book until I’d read it from cover to cover. Of course this adventure wouldn’t have been possible without Mok, the mother of the famous Changnoi and the faithful woman behind the intrepid Michael.

WORDLE #114

For Sunday Whirl: Class, Complex, Tracks, Gas, Edge, Forest, Answers, Files, Still, Lie, Pale, Mess.

X FILES

Prepare for a Master Class
in solving complex problems...

Start by following the tracks
that lead from the gas station
to the edge of the forest.

The answers are all out there...

The files still lie unopened
in their pale, faded folders.

So try not to leave a mess!

For Sunday Whirl: Chattering, Splits, Scoop, Moonshine, Anything, Giggle, Crazy, Load, Sense, Cut, Cave, Wake, Shatters.

CHEERS...!

A guy walks into a bar
teeth chattering from the cold

Splits a fifty note to buy
a scoop or two of moonshine

Anything for a giggle

Says - I know this sounds crazy
and won't make a load of sense
so I'll just cut to the chase...

Cave paintings depict our dreams!

So I try not to wake up...
It shatters the illusion...

For Sunday Whirl: Status, Page, Rest, Park, Curb, Shimmering, Steps, Spill, Yard, Spewing, Thunder, Jets.

WHAT'S ON YOUR MIND?

Just updating my status

For Sunday Whirl: Yield, Current, Phrase, Shift, Beam, Heart, Range, Fertile, Close, Anchor, Connect, Layers.

FOCUS

Don't yield to the temptation
Of drifting with the current
Re-phrase your definition
Shift up to Warp Factor Nine
And follow that pulsing beam
Beating in time with your heart
Stay in range of fertile thought
Get close enough to anchor
Until at last you connect
With new layers of knowledge

For Sunday Whirl: Dressing, Thousand, Messages, Count, Spit, Front, Pulsing, Charm, Thunderous, Dish, Soup, Red.

REACTION

Overdue a dressing-down
A thousand text messages
(At the very latest count)
Spit their angry words at him
While he stands at front of house
Pulsing with offensive charm
Receives thunderous applause
For serving Dish of the Day
In this jumped-up Soup Kitchen!

You could say I'm seeing red...

Illusion, reality
Normality returning

Learning from the beginning
Winning is not important
Oughtn't be a distraction

Satisfaction is derived
(Not contrived) from taking part

Heart and soul, body and mind
Find their own way to express
Less or more, it makes no odds

Swallow hard... Soon be over...!

CATCH 22

They say the greater part of valour
Is discretion
While possession is nine tenths
Of the law
And though the score may be settled
At your leisure
They'll take the pleasure all the same
And what is more...

Like a cat with nine whole lifetimes
To enjoy
They'll employ your services
Time after time
They're well aware that they're exploiting
Your emotions
But your devotion is a weakness
Not a crime...

And by the time you realise
You have a voice
You'll know your choice of silence
Was your fatal flaw
So you'll ignore the urge to run
From their circus
Because escape is not an option
Anymore...

OWERNERSHIP

At certain times it may be inappropriate
Here's hoping that we're not caught unawares
At certain times it may be unconventional
Intentional or otherwise, who cares?
At certain times it may be inconvenient
You're lenient, but flexible you're not
At certain times it may be untraditional
Conditions will dictate who says what's what
At certain times it may be unacceptable
This aspect will take some time to evolve
At certain times it may be unforgiveable
But, if at all it's possible, absolve
At certain times it may be inexcusable
It used to be unusual, times past
At certain times it may be inconceivable
That data is retrievable, at last
At certain times it may be unbelievable
That some things are achievable at all
At certain times it may be undeniable
That I am able to receive the call
At certain times it may be inexplicable
How quickly we are able to accept
At certain times it may be disagreeable
This will be all we'd normally expect
At certain times it may be inconsiderate
Or did a bit of thought go into it?
At certain times it may be irresponsible
And once you walk away, the blame will hit
At certain times it may be unavoidable
Devoid of any barriers or walls
At certain times it may be unreliable
So try and see if someone's got the balls
At certain times it may be unadvisable
A sizeable majority agree
But then again, at times it's understandable
Demand a reason why this should not be
At times like this, it's absolutely critical
To literally stand up for your cause
And times like this you've got to have the way with all
To say with all your heart, what's yours, is yours

VIRTUAL REALTY

I've grown accustomed to those telly sessions
of very professional declutterers
not just mutterers of minimalist dogma
but trog practitioners of home-improvement makeovers
who want to take over our thought process
in order to possess our body and mind
so they can blind us with art not science

Giants they are definitely not...

They've just got a lot of big ideas
to match their big-wig careers
and their not so grand designs

RANDOM ACCESS

At one time
or another
I thought I knew
a thing or two

Friend or foe
I'd have a go

Win or not
unimportant

Taking part
the achievement

Now I know
a thing or three
my memory
a loyal servant
takes great care
to keep me posted
stores events
but most of all
gives me a sense
of satisfaction

My reaction
to a challenge
is to keep
that healthy balance
at my core

And now I'm sure
that day or night
my mind is strong

Am I right?

Or am I... wrong?

A NAPOWRIMO VISIT

-or-

AW... IMPROVISATION!

A brief explanation before I commence
Waiting for words that make some kind of sense...

I'm writing this straight off the top of my head
Making it up as I think about bed
Paper and Pen, in the old-fashioned way
Ready to play?
Or call it a day?
Vocal attachment might be an idea
I'll have to speak up so that people can hear
Set up my camera in video mode
Actions speak louder, my research has showed
Timing is crucial... Or so somebody (whose name I don't remember) once said
It's getting quite late now... I'm ready for bed
Only one line left to finish this verse
Now leave a comment... Go on... Do your worst...!

Sorry about video quality and the illusion of appearing sideways... but it is VERY early Saturday morning

BROKEN NEWS

April 17 Year of the Snake

Kim Jong Un, in North Korea
Threatens war; thermonuclear
Pyongyang ready to attack?
Seoul defences, watch your back!

Meanwhile, over in USA
Boston bombers have their say
Finish Line, so near, so far
In the long run, fatal scar

Cyprus, China; here's an oddity
Blamed for price fall in commodities
Crude Oil, Gas, as bad as Gold
Stack it high and get it sold!

British public on its best
Maggie Thatcher, laid to rest
Past mistakes now glorified
Cameron's actions justified

That's the news, now here's the weather
This winter chill might last forever
So wrap up warm and stay indoors
Await the war to end all wars

Don't say my plan is to mislead you.
The day you can, then yes indeed, you
must report my action; be abrupt.
Distort, augment, but never corrupt.

Whatever occurs is for the best.
Don't rest until your duty is done.
The beauty is, you'll find it becomes
some kind of mental merry-go-round...

All very profound... Don't you agree...?

HALF LIFE

Semi-autobiographical?
Mathematical half-true story?

Barring a few of the gory details
it never fails to grab our attention

And did I mention it's based on fact?
Though half is missing, to be exact

And no-one's guessing the reason why
It makes me cry, it's so frustrating!

And I'm not even exaggerating
I'm just debating the pros and cons
while the frozen ones start on their fast thaw

Relaxing their jaw to have their say
they offer a ray of clarity...

But everyone knows reality
can often be stranger than fiction

... as in this depiction of life

NAPOWRIMO 2013 #14

AMENDMENT

Very often sceptical
Therefore only a slight chance
Of being in full control
And beginning to unwind
Complexities of the Ninth

You might be so bold as to
Saturate yourself with facts
Then breathe a sigh of relief
When at last you discover
You're standing on the threshold

...Not on the blade of a sword
