GUESTS - GIFT - SHALLOW GRAVE

GUESTS

Feb 26, 2010 Diamond's 2nd birthday.

THANKS BE TO GOD

God’s
Greatest
Gift Granted,
Given Gladly,
Graciously Guarded.
Genuine Gratitude

THIS DAY

The day before tomorrow
The day he’ll meet his maker
Reflections of a sinner
Reflections of remorse

The gift of freedom, precious
That priceless treasure granted
To all men as a birthright
Now squandered without thought

The day after yesterday
The day of guilty verdict
Twenty four short months ago
Not twenty four long hours

If only he could return
If only… oh, if only
He could have spared a man’s life
He could have spared his own

This day, a day of hindsight
Today a day of regret
‘Forgive me for my weakness
Forgive my mortal sin’

He takes his tarnished treasure
He places it in a box
Buries his worthless freedom
In an unmarked, shallow grave

  3. I'm not sure if you'll take this as the complement it is intended to be, but I do not find many of your poems comfortable. They make me think and rethink, often squirming as I do. I thank you for shaking out my complacency.

  4. Thanks Yousei; If they provoke thought, then I've achieved at least one aim. No reaction would be a disappointment.

  6. Thanks Tumblewords. They cleaned up the food - we were left to clean up the mess.

  9. As said above, sometimes uncomfortable, but I think that is the point. Poetry should always stir something.

  11. Love the final stanza in This Day. Is the narrator actually regretting actions or the loss of time to commit more sins?

  12. Looks like it was a fine birthday celebration - and I liked the gift poem (Thanks be to God). Thanks for visiting and commenting on my post too!

    Anthony; I think so too.
Carol; But a less than beautiful mess to clear up afterwards.
Julia; Probably just regretting his punishment.
Amy; I appreciate your visit too.

  15. Thanks lv2scpbk; A great time had by all - as for the food, you'd have to ask the kids. They didn't save any for me.

  16. This is the part where I usually make some flippant comment, filled with lots of "G" words and go away feeling smug with my ability to come up with prolific alliteration.

    But I cannot.

Your poem, THANKS BE TO GOD, though simple at first glance touched me. I read it quickly, then about halfway through THIS DAY, I stopped, and went back and read "THANKS" again. Each time I read it I was more impressed with how much it said, in so few words.

So, the only word I can come up with doesn't start with a "G".

    WOW!

  17. Thanks Troy; Often, things (gifts) that appear simple at first glance become our greatest treasures. I've often witnessed how children express their gratitude, by taking good care of their favourite toys, clothes, etc. No words are necessary. This was really the point I wanted to make here, but was restricted to G's - which actually worked.
