WHIRL #99

...IN THE UK

Written by an outsider
...Shopping sprees are the future...
(when transfer window opens)
Use it or lose it, I say

Intimate fans 'love' their team
Away end don't leave early
Part time supporters stay home
Think it's like watching paint dry

Billion pound investment
Body blow to United
Manchester's two fearsome teams
City... and City reserves...!

  1. he he. I especially like the first stanza, since I understand shopping better than football!

  2. Ha Ha - A US football fan here - sport somewhat different but passion resonates... "part time supporters stay home" :) and
"intimate supporters don't leave early" as a NY Jets football fan (which in all likelihood means nothing - so I shall tell you that such fans are long awaiting another victory .. this poem had me smiling and nodding)...

  3. I'm not sure I really understood, but I liked it just the same.

  4. Shopping spree or scrapping spree..i guess no city is big enough for two footie teams..maybe it's tribal..or secretly a bit of fun..(blood and major injuries aside)

    1. Emulsion's OK, but full gloss can get a bit tedious... :)

  9. Stan, I enjoyed this, however, I don't know a thing about football even though I live in a country where it is very popular.

    1. Good lord you should see the craziness around football and Oxford United (I live in OXON ½ the year). The stadium is right beside a popular movie complex and one really has to pick one’s movie dates wisely. No one ever stays still long enough to watch the paint dry.

  12. Men (and women) love to hate. Better a football team or a political party than an individual.

  13. First - thanks for visiting both of my pieces.

I'm a 'part-timer' in most sport. But I am still a 'die-hard' Mets (baseball team) fan. I even saw a banner my hubby had made while he was at an away game. Before I met him. And you know how long a TV camera spot is. So it was quite a surprise years later after we were married when I was sorting through things to unfold and find this same said banner!

  15. I live in a "College Town", where the (U.S.) football team is made into a way of life, and your poem reminded me of the sentiment around here. I am a part-timer...mostly I just like to say "Roll Tide!" So, Roll Tide, Stan, well done!
